If you look closely at this piece of art, you’ll notice a small
girl off to the right side. That young girl is simply running. However, when you look
around at the other figures in this painting, it is prevalent that no one else
is moving. All of the static figures in this painting represent the multitude of
impediments and hindrances in the world. Those who are staring blankly ahead are
the people who are mindless, unchanging, and frankly boring members of society.
These people simply do as they are told as they follow the crowd and do nothing
else but abide by the social norm. I, on the other hand, am that single girl
running in the background. I am that young girl who is trying to break free from
the crowd and become my own person. I am that girl who is striving to be
comfortable and efficient enough to be accepted in Honors English class with her
off-the-wall essays, and her off-the-wall personality in life. It’s hard to be
that girl who sticks out in the crowd, which is why so many glance over the
running girl in Georges Seurat’s
A Sunday on La Grande Jette.
Not many people notice her at this moment because she is in the background, much
as I have been throughout my life, afraid of being in the spotlight with my
ideas. After this year though, I’ve made it my priority in the future to take
those off-the-wall ideas, and make them center
stage.
